Sophie Amelkin is a versatile singer/actor who performs actively in musical theater, contemporary opera, and professional chamber ensembles across the country. In 2019, Sophie made her New York City theatrical debut playing the title role in the new musical My Princess Diana at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. Additional selected upcoming and recent stage appearances include a performance of The Buddy Holly Story (San Antonio Broadway Theatre), contemporary chamber opera The Dybbuk (New York City), Cabaret Soloist (Tabletop Broadway), a recital of Ladino and Yiddish art song (Minneapolis), The Buddy Holly Story (Amana, IA), and soloist in Bach’s Coffee Cantata with Skål Chamber Collective, a cross-over chamber ensemble with whom she is a core member. Additional operatic credits include Despina (Così Fan Tutte), St. Teresa of Avila (Four Saints in Three Acts), Bianca (La Rondine), and Witch (Hansel and Gretel).
Sophie is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington (B.M. Vocal Performance) and the University of Minnesota (M.M. Vocal Performance). Sophie has workshopped with many of NYC’s top musical theater industry casting directors, agents, and stage directors. Sophie is currently based in Washington, D.C., and teaches primarily via zoom/skype.
Sophie’s teaching philosophy stems from a belief that great singers build their voices and overall craft on a foundation of strong, practiced technique, as well as expressive, adventurous, dramatic exploration. She believes that technicality and expressivity serve one another beautifully. She also strongly advocates for the study of theory and piano to better serve students throughout their musical lives.
