Sarah DeYong earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Theatre from Oklahoma City University (OCU) where she was required to study a range of musical styles while maintaining a healthy, classical technique under the tutelage of voice instructor Brenda Holleman. At OCU, she became the soprano section leader of both the OCU Chamber Choir and the OCU Chapel Choir. Meanwhile, she performed in numerous musical theatre shows, operas, recitals and concerts.
After Graduation, Sarah stayed in Oklahoma for a time and worked as a voice instructor for Oklahoma City University Performing Arts Academy and for Poteet Theatre. Sarah spent a brief period in Colorado where she performed the role of Rapunzel in Into the Woods at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse alongside Grammy Award Winner Debby Boone as The Witch.
Since moving to Minneapolis in 2016, Sarah has become an active professional in the Twin Cities theatre and film communities. She’s worked with companies such as Artistry Theatre, The National Theatre for Children, Chameleon Theatre Circle and St. Croix Off Broadway Dinner Theatre. She has numerous professional film and tv credits (ABC, High Voltage Films, MCTC, MCAD) with several projects in pre-production. Sarah also works as a visual artist, rendering oil paintings from photographs (on commission) and creating originals to sell.
During our lessons, I want you to stay healthy and have fun. Once you have a solid foundation and a little confidence, your voice will flourish!
I use positive reinforcement to encourage good habits and guide you away from anything that will cause unnecessary stress to your instrument. The teacher-student relationship must be built on communication and trust. I aim to help my students recognize and celebrate even the smallest improvements so that they gain the confidence to thrive and learn to solve problems on their own.
Like other parts of the body, the voice can be exercised to gain strength and endurance but it is unhealthy to push the voice too far, too fast. Building a healthy, strong sound requires patience and diligence as you master and maintain new concepts.
Singing reduces stress, improves mood and mental alertness, and even boosts the immune system. Lessons are the best way to make sure that you are benefiting from all of this while protecting your instrument so that you keep your beautiful voice healthy.
