Baritone Robert H. Riordan, a Wisconsin native, is at home on both grand operatic stages as well as intimate cabaret venues. A graduate of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, he recently returned to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area after completing a 2-year contract with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. In the summer of 2021, Robert was a Tomita Young Artist with Finger Lakes Opera where he sang Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Wolfgang Bigbad in their children’s opera The Three Little Pigs. In the 2020/21 season Robert performed the Wolf/Dr. Dulcamara in FLO’s recorded production of Pinocchio and sang in the chorus of Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. In 2020 he also appeared as a guest artist with the Dudley Birder Chorale as a soloist for Beethoven’s Mass in C. Additional credits include Sid in Albert Herring, Frank in Die Fledermaus, Junius in The Rape of Lucretia, and Top in the Bulgarian premiere of The Tender Land. Upcoming performances include King Balthazar in Skylark Opera Theatre’s Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Robert holds a Master of Music in voice performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He received a Bachelor of Music in voice performance and a Bachelor of Science in Business from UMN-TC. He has also performed with Aspen Music Festival, Varna International, La Musica Lirica, and Opera Viva.
My teaching philosophy is based upon supportive instruction to give students the space to play and explore their own voice, both technically and artistically, to help them find their unique sound. I believe that singing is a whole body experience which requires attention to breath, sensation, and technical understanding of the apparatus. Intertwined with the physical aspects of singing are the mental aspects of expression, confidence, and mindfulness. Good singing is a product of the symbiotic relationship of healthy technique and expressive story-telling.
