Evan Shallcross began his violin studies in the twin cities with Taichi and Robin Chen. He obtained performance degrees from Oberlin Conservatory (BM) and the Yale School of Music (MM), where he studied with Milan Vitek and Syoko Aki, respectively. Since he has performed and held positions with major orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the New Haven Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and as concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Hong Kong. He has been involved in chamber music, co-founding the Hong Kong Chamber Music Collective and Crossroads String Duo, and has been active as a soloist, conductor, and composer. In parallel with performance, Evan has long been passionate about teaching students and ensembles of all ages and levels.
The opportunity to see students grow through music is a true privilege. I do my best to create an affirming, non-judgmental space in which we can collaboratively identify and work through obstacles and toward new goals. Along the way, the development of discipline, skills and understanding should be in balance with a sense of agency and creative freedom, to patiently build a musical foundation that supports curiosity, exploration, and growth.
