Sarah Wybaczynsky is a recent transplant from Southern California, where she worked for eight years as a freelance vocal coach, music director, piano instructor, and classroom teacher in Los Angeles and Orange County.  Sarah earned her Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Music Education and her K-12 Vocal Music teaching credential from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 2009.

She studied Operatic Vocal Performance at the Franco-American Vocal Academy in France (through University of Texas, Austin) and at California State University, Fullerton for two years before switching degree programs.  She earned her Master’s degree in Music History & Literature in 2017 after the completion of her thesis: a theoretical analysis of the musical themes from the film Gone with the Wind.  She has taught in a variety of classroom settings, private and public, including: Baton Rouge Center for Visual & Performing Arts (Baton Rouge, LA); Our Savior’s Lutheran Church & School (San Clemente, CA); Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Co. (Yorba Linda, CA); Los Alamitos High School (Los Alamitos, CA); Anaheim Hills Elementary School (Anaheim Hills,CA); Fullerton College Musical Theater Conservatory (Fullerton, CA); St. John the Baptist Church & School (Jordan, MN); and Washburn High School (Minneapolis, MN).

Sarah’s resume includes 100+ theatrical productions in musical theater and opera, as well as concerts, recitals, masterclasses, and other special projects for which she provided music direction, piano accompaniment, vocals, conducting, adjudication, arranging, editing, and recording. Her students span all ages and experience levels, and performance venues range internationally from small churches and recital halls to regional theaters.

Sarah’s favorite past projects include: accompanying for two master classes with Broadway performer Laura Bell Bundy; music director/pianist for the West Coast premiere of High Fidelity; music director for Fullerton College’s centennial production, Ragtime; music director/pianist/arranger for original musical revues, Piano Party and Piano Party 2; Calico Saloon ragtime pianist at Knott’s Berry Farm (CA); music director/conductor for Jesus Christ Superstar (Mysterium Theater), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater), and Bonnie & Clyde (Southgate Productions). Since moving to Minnesota in 2017, Sarah has worked as a freelance accompanist and classroom teacher at various locations in the Twin Cities. During the 2017-2018 school year, she served as the vocal director for 9th grade choirs at Washburn High School under the mentorship of Nancy Lee, three-time honorable mention award recipient for the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University’s Excellence in Theatre Education.  Sarah took the summer “off” to spend time with her newborn son, and is excited to jump back into teaching.

I hope that all my students learn to express themselves through their study of music. In whatever way this expression manifests itself, and for whatever reason the study takes place–professional stage, degree program, karaoke bar, or privacy of your own home. I  strive to create a safe space that fosters creativity and personal growth.  Students can expect to become well-rounded musicians when studying with me. In addition to learning healthy technique and sustainability, vocalists will learn basics of music theory, piano, and musicianship.  My specialty with vocalists is releasing tension in the body to discover the “true” voice. For pianists, I use a fast-track technique focusing on improvisation (using written and implied chords) that improves sight-reading ability.

Payment – Payment will be accepted monthly at the beginning of each month, or on a lesson to lesson basis, according to the student’s preference. If payment is not received by the 1st week of the month, the student will be charged a $10 late fee. Checks are preferred. There will be a $15 charge for returned checks, plus bank fees. Cash and Venmo are also accepted. You are paying for a time slot, therefore it is important to be early and prepared at your lesson. Lesson times will not be extended if you run late.

Cancelation Policy – If a lesson is cancelled by the student, I must receive 24 hours notice to reschedule the lesson. If less notice is received, I am not obligated to make up that lesson and the student will still be required to pay for the missed lesson. All lessons canceled by me (ample notice will be given) will be made up within one month.

Interview Lesson – An interview lesson is a chance for us to get to know each other, for me to hear your voice, and for you to ask as many questions as you like. It is also a chance to see if it will be a good fit both for the teacher and the student. A one-time 30 min interview lesson will be offered at $25. Prospective students are asked to bring in one song with accompaniment (sheet music or instrumental-only backing track) and notebook paper to take notes.
