Teaching Subjects: Piano, Guitar

Styles: Jazz, Contemporary, Classical

Ages: 12+

Specialties: Improvisation, Composition, Music Theory

Paul has played the piano since he was three and a half feet tall. When he was about 4’8” he picked up guitar, an obsession that lasted for all his teenage years. He spent 2-4 hours a day practicing guitar, improvising at the piano, and recording his own songs, including full-band arrangements, in his bedroom. He inserted himself into rock bands, jazz combos, a symphony orchestra, a brass quintet, a men’s choir, and music theory, music history, and electronic music classes, and was an all-state trumpet player in high school.

At age 20 Paul discovered the other great passion of his life, meditation, and has balanced and combined that with his passion for music ever since. Piano became his primary instrument. His compositions and improvisations became more complex, more classical, and more spiritual. He earned a B.A. in Musicology from the University of Minnesota. He has completed significant piano compositions and learned major classical pieces in recent years and has re-immersed himself in the world of recording and audio engineering.

Paul studies actively with senior teachers in the Minneapolis area and reads books about music to continue his education. He has been teaching professionally since 2019, at the height of 5’11”.

Beginners and advanced students are welcome!

Paul is fascinated by the puzzle of how best to learn and teach music and is constantly seeking out new ideas about it. A creative musician, he excels at teaching improvisation, composition, and music theory. He shows students not just how to play music, but how to understand it deeply. He emphasizes the importance of music listening in the development of musicianship. And he believes playing by ear is a learnable skill.

Paul is keenly aware of the challenges of finding time for consistent music practice in a busy modern life. He encourages students to reflect on their priorities and keep a practice journal to help them meet their own practice goals. He gives practice assignments that are focused enough to lead to breakthroughs, and that are tailored to what the student finds musically exciting and stimulating. For students interested in meditation, he can show how to use meditation to benefit one’s practice and performance.
