Colleen is a guitarist of over fifteen years and a pianist of over six years with a love for songwriting and improvisation. She has spent years performing in various bands and ensembles in her hometown of Washington, D.C. and in the Twin Cities. Colleen graduated from Macalester College, where she studied jazz guitar and composition. While at Macalester, Colleen played guitar in jazz band and various ensembles, and wrote original music for various groups, from solo pieces to big band arrangements. She spends her summers teaching instrument lessons and band coaching at Girls Rock n Roll Retreat, and plays guitar in the band Rabeca.
Colleen’s approach begins by working with each student to help them identify and achieve their musical goals. Colleen believes that music is a powerful tool for self-expression, and strives to help each student discover their own musical voice. She uses a combination of note reading, chord learning, music theory, and ear training. While she recognizes the importance of note reading, her teaching focuses on learning by ear, which allows students to improvise, write their own music, and play along to their favorite songs! She creates a comfortable and encouraging atmosphere in lessons, where students feel comfortable taking risks and challenging themselves. Her specialties include jazz improvisation, composition, and arranging.
