Sophie Amelkin has been praised for her “vibrant” stage presence (Twin Cities Star Tribune) and for possessing a voice “as emotional as it is charming” (The Wilmington Star News). Recent and upcoming concert highlights include chamber ensemble performances with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, and MPLS (imPulse) as well as solo appearances with the Minnesota Oratorio Society and Magnum Chorum including the world premiere of Paul Rudoi’s Sermon on the Mount.

Sophie received her Bachelor of Music degree at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and her Master of Music degree at the University of Minnesota where she studied under Professor Jean Del Santo. During her graduate studies, she performed the roles of Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Lapak in The Cunning Little Vixen and was a finalist in the Minnesota NATS competition as well as the Saint Paul Schubert Club Scholarship Competition.

“I come from a classical piano and acting background, so I firmly believe that great singers, like most great musicians and actors, build their voice and craft on a foundation of strong, practiced technique, as well as expressive, adventurous dramatic exploration. Technicality and expressivity serve each other beautifully. I also advocate for study of theory and piano to better serve my students through their musical lives.”

  • "As a colleague of Ms. Sophie Amelkin, I could not recommend her more highly as an instructor. The care and dedication Ms. Amelkin has toward her own voice is the same care and dedication she takes with her students' voices. As an instructor, she is focused on helping her students become mindful and well informed musicians. Encouraging deeper understanding of music, text, and their own instrument, Ms. Amelkin gives her students the tools they need to become self sufficient musicians. Her caring and diligent personality ensures that each student receives the unique attention they need, with each lesson being well thought out yet flexible, to meet her students where they are. Ms. Amelkin is an incredible example of what a voice instructor should be - thoughtful, dedicated, intelligent, supportive, and encouraging. I would trust her with any of my own students, knowing they would be in excellent hands." - Brittany Rudoi
