Rebecca Hass has run her own piano studio in the area since 2006, now with over 20 students, and has more than 10 years of private lesson teaching experience in the Twin Cities and Ithaca, NY. Her student-centered approach is fun and also motivating for students, emphasizing both reading music and learning to improvise. She loves teaching students of all ages, and belongs to a number of professional organizations: MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), MMTA (MN Music Teachers Association, SPPTA (St Paul Piano Teachers Association), and APPI (Association of Professional Piano Teachers). She also teaches keyboard skills and music theory to high school musical theater students enrolled in the Prelude Singer-Actor Performance Lab program at MacPhail Center for Music.

Rebecca is also an active accompanist and performer in the Twin Cities area, accompanying at MacPhail Center for Music for the Suzuki string program and Prelude Singer-Actor Performance Lab program; for musical theater classes at St Paul Conservatory of Performing Arts, for classical performers, and for numerous weddings and events. In the past, she has also accompanied at Northeast Methodist Church, Anne’s Dance Studio, and a number of local theater groups.

Rebecca’s interests extend to many types of music, including classical, jazz, and her biggest passion, Brazilian – playing in the local percussion group Batucada do Norte. She also is a founding member of the Modern Spark Trio, a piano trio with diverse repertoire that plays music for weddings and events. She appears on the recordings River Light by songwriter Andy Juhl, and For Now the Winter Has Passed by local composer Chris Granias. She enjoys arranging for herself and her students, and more recently has expanded into composing as well, including an ongoing collaboration with visual artist Nick Howard.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano with a concentration in art history and anthropology from Ithaca College, where she was awarded Music Teachers National Association’s StAR award for piano teaching in 2005.

Music should be a part of everyone’s life, a way to learn about the world and ourselves, helping develop many skills that apply to other aspects of life. Whether you plan to be a professional pianist, or to play for your own enjoyment, I will work with you to accomplish your goals. We will cover music theory, history, technique, and musicianship skills, so that you can become a well-rounded musician. I work with my students to cover a wide range of styles of music, such as classical, jazz, pop, rock, and Brazilian, but concentrating on the styles that you love most!
