I am a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota, Morris, with degrees in vocal performance and Spanish, and a minor in piano accompanying. These days I sing mostly classical repertoire, though I have also studied jazz and musical theater extensively. I sing with the VocalEssence chorus under the direction of Phillip Brunelle, and I work with the Schubert Club to provide musical training to students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds.

During my time at UMM I sang with a variety of choral ensembles, from small chamber choirs to large 60-voice concert choirs. I directed a jazz choir that performed at UMM’s Jazz Fest and sang with a number of jazz combos at UMM, performing repertoire that ranged from Ska to Soul to Blues. I also attended and performed at a Jazz Workshop at McNally Smith where I studied with vocal coach Lori Dokken. I have extensive Musical Theater experience, having sung in the choruses of Guys and Dolls and Pippin, and performed the roles of Lady Larken in Once Upon a Mattress and the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

In the summer of 2012, I worked as Assistant Director/Accompanist for the Performing Arts Institute in Kingston, PA, where I accompanied and coached singers for a performance of West Side Story. I also ran a variety show, accompanying and coaching singers in selections from a broad range of shows. As a soloist, I have performed a large body of modern music: Libby Larsen’s, Try Me Good King; Jake Heggie’s, Eve-Song; and Xavier Montsalvatge’s, Cinco Canciones Negras; among many others. My lecture recital considering the textual analysis of Heggie’s, Eve-Song was accepted to the College Music Society’s conference in the Spring of 2013. I sang three solo recitals at UMM, and performed at a number of events, including a short lecture recital which was selected as the Featured Presentation at UMM’s Undergraduate Research Symposium in 2012.

In 2011 I sang a duet with Garrison Keillor on A Prairie Home Companion when the show was broadcast from UMM. My music teachers have always been more than just teachers for me: mentors; role models; friends, and as an individual lessons instructor, I have enjoyed being these things for my students.

The biggest hurdle to becoming a successful singer is to achieve complete comfort and release in your own body. I work to incorporate light stretching and body awareness exercises into my instruction, in an effort to help my students achieve that comfort.

In lessons, students can expect to gain a deeper understanding of their instruments, a solid foundation of technique and a free-flowing artistic expression. These things pave the way for healthy, vibrant, beautiful singing!

  • I would highly recommend Anika for voice lessons. I was an absolute beginner when I started with no vocal aspirations beyond singing 'Happy Birthday' and karaoke with a little more gusto. Anika did a great job of identifying the level I was at and tailoring lessons specific to my needs. We went from the basics of how to breathe and stand while using your voice to singing songs(big deal for me). She has a great way of making beginners feel comfortable using their voice and every lesson was a pleasure to attend.

If you're a beginner looking to try voice lessons you can't go wrong with Anika and from hearing her sing during lessons I think people of all levels could learn a lot from her.

  • I have been taking singing lessons from Anika for four months now and I've noticed improvement in my singing every week. Not only that, but others have taken note as well! Anika has helped me find my ideal singing range and has worked with me to improve my technique, tone, pitch, and range. I'm now singing songs comfortably and confidently that four months ago I would have strained to sing. I'm very pleased with with our work so far and I look forward to even more improvement in the future.

  • Those lessons are GREAT! My son has been enjoying Anika's voical class. Thank you for creating such a beautiful, relaxing, soul-lifting experience.

  • Anika is a fantastic voice instructor. She is very professional and has an expansive knowledge of vocal music and technique. She can quickly assess a voice and suggest exercises that rapidly improve one's sound. I feel very fortunate to have Anika as an instructor. Her positive and warm communication style makes for a fun and creative environment that I look forward to every week.
